Ah, election season—our favorite time of the year. It’s that magical period when suddenly everyone, including your barista, your neighbor’s dog, and that one guy you barely know from high school, turns into a political expert. Your social feeds become a never-ending cycle of doom, your group chats morph into mini-debate stages, and you can’t even open your inbox without seeing a headline like “The World Is Ending (Again): Here’s Why.”
You know it’s getting real when even staying hydrated starts to feel like a political act. Why drink water when you could be “staying informed,” right? Wrong. Very, very wrong. Because here's the thing—while the world is collectively spiraling, your job is not to be its therapist.
I know, I know. It feels like we all have to be involved 24/7. But here’s the kicker: just because the election circus is in town doesn’t mean you need to buy a front-row ticket, set up camp, and watch every act. Newsflash—you’ve got a life, people to care about, dreams to chase, and things to do that don’t involve getting into heated Facebook debates with your cousin, Karen.
So, if you’re ready to keep your cool while the rest of the world loses theirs, stick with me. Let’s talk about how to survive election season without becoming an anxious, news-obsessed zombie. Spoiler alert: it involves boundaries, lots of deep breaths, and maybe a little laughter.
1. Recognize that This is Not Your Circus
We all get sucked in. One moment, you’re having an average day, and then BAM—you’re deep into a Twitter thread about election scandals, and suddenly, it feels like you’re personally responsible for fixing the entire political system. Here’s the truth: you’re not. Take a deep breath. You are not running for office (unless you are, in which case, good luck!), and it’s not your job to manage the chaos. Let it go. You’ve got enough on your plate.
2. Remember the Algorithm Does Not Care About Your Well-Being
Just like Instagram turned into a circus of ‘pick me!’ and ‘look at me!’—political media is pretty much the same deal. The loudest voices get the most attention, making you feel like you’re not informed unless you’re diving into every debate. Spoiler alert: you can totally tune out. Your mental health is far more important than getting involved in every shouting match on Facebook or the latest dramatic headline.
3. Set Boundaries Like You Mean It
Boundaries are your best friend right now. Whether it’s limiting social media scrolling or refusing to engage in heated discussions with your neighbor who has very strong feelings about everything, protect your peace. Election stress does not deserve prime real estate in your brain. Just like you’d stop yourself from doom-scrolling Instagram, you can do the same here. Trust me, the election will still happen whether you check every update or not.
4. Turn the Election Drama Into an Opportunity for Self-Care
Here’s a wild thought—what if you used election season as an excuse to take care of you? Instead of letting it drag you down, flip the script. Every time you feel that familiar anxiety bubbling up, replace it with something that actually makes you feel good. Go for a walk, drink your frothy matcha (you knew I’d mention matcha), meditate, or do that thing you love but never have time for because, newsflash, you don’t need to be plugged into the madness 24/7.
5. Accept that People Will Have Opinions—And That’s Okay
People will talk. They’ll get loud. And sometimes, they’ll go on rants that make you wonder if they’ve completely lost it. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to fix them. You don’t need to engage in every conversation. Let them have their opinions, and you hold onto your peace. Sometimes, the greatest act of self-care is just not getting involved. Release the need to be right or to prove your point. Peace of mind > winning an argument.
6. Keep Your Focus on What Matters Most
Your life doesn’t stop just because the election is happening. Your family, your career, your passion projects—those are the things that need your energy right now. The election will come and go, but what are you building and nurturing in your life? Those last. So, put your focus where it counts. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
7. Life is Too Short to Let Politics Steal Your Joy
The political climate is beyond your control. You can vote and stay informed, but you do not have to give it the power to steal your joy. Your well-being, your happiness, and your purpose? Those are your superpowers. So lean into them, and let the rest just be there. Election anxiety is real, but your peace is stronger. Let’s protect, nurture, and laugh a little along the way. And hey, if you ever feel like you’re spiraling, just remember—there’s always time for a good frothy matcha and a deep breath. Life is too precious to be spent stressing about things we can’t control.
